This project is a wholesale makeover of a 1920s two-story brick home in an exclusive neighborhood of Newton, an elite suburb of Boston. The design called for stripping the building back to the shell and a large addition out the rear. The solution was to maintain the integrity of the original form and add a new gable form to the rear that runs parallel to the existing. The result is a two buildings discretely linked – siblings. A dramatic band of continuous double hung windows that spans the front façade and turns the corner, left and right, allows the steeply pitch roof to appear almost as it is floating in the night sky.Careful detailing and selection of the siding styles was key to adding a contemporary flair to a New England classic.
